By the time this entry posts, I will be pulling my Expedition onto the boat, on my way to Daughter #1's first college Parent's Weekend.
It's a long ride, so poor Daughter #2 is being ripped out of school on both Friday and Monday, which I know makes me a terrible parent who will no doubt be incurring the wrath of her teachers, very nice people that used to like me when I worked at the high school for three years.
D #1 has big plans for us. Friday and Saturday nights there are theater events and dinner plans with new friends. During the day she's made it clear we are to take her shopping to the nearby factory outlets, and to buy her a bike to use on campus.
Now, the outlets I get. That's the daughter I know. But a bike?
It's not that I don't think it's a terrific idea. I do. But D #1 requesting a bike is a little like Lance Armstrong saying he's passing up this year's Tour de France to take a Quantum Physics class (no offense, Lance).
Last month it was a tattoo. Now it's a bike. I'm a little nauseous, wondering what next month might bring. A change in major? A live-in boyfriend? Surely I jest.
But this is college, right? A time for experimentation and self discovery. Who am I to stand in the way of that?
Here's hoping she hasn't changed so much that I can at least recognize her when I see her. I'll be so relieved, I'll buy her the most bitching bike we can find.

I was just thinking, "College is the time for spreading their wings and trying new things" - I think it's excellent she wants a bike to get around on campus.
You will take pictures, and post them? Yes?

Hope you have a wonderful weekend. It is funny how visiting our kids at college always costs more than we expect....

I think it's great that she wants a bike. With luck, she'll be hooked and be a rider for life.
Travel safely and have a nice time!

Ah parent's weekend. I don't know that I ever participated in that. Probably because I was gone rodeoing on parents' weekend.
I bought a bike in college. Still have it. Still ride it. I love it. So I'm down with you buying her a bitchin' ride!
Hope you have fun!
Oh and you pulling your daughter out of school- not at all a bad thing. Not all learning takes place in a classroom. Or so my daddy used to always say!

Sounds like she has a wonderful time planned.
It is great that she is allowing herself to experience new things. Hopefully she doesn't go to far with it, for your sake.
Hope you have a good and safe trip.

How exciting. Have a wonderful time. At least she isn't asking you to buy her a sofa...

I'll be anxious to hear how your weekend went. I'm living vicariously through you, knowing that in just 2 short years my oldest will be experiencing college. I can't believe I'm already the parent of a high school junior. I'll be counting on you for advice during these turbulent years!

That's exactly what I was thinking...., "Oh, no....she's changing.....no fair!"
That must be so hard.....I'm not looking forward to this AT ALL.
Simply tell her that we forbid her to change. End of subject.
Cocktail anyone?

Sounds like a great weekend!
I'll be going to see my kid in a few weeks at her college. My oldest daughter and I will make the road trip. She's in a play (theatre major).
No tattoos on my kid, but I do wonder what else she has gotten pierced. She has 15 so far. yikes!

I'm so sad. I'm going to miss my son's Parent's Weekend. He's 3,000 miles away and I just can't justify the cost when he'll be home 3 weekends later for thanksgiving. But I'm sad and pouty over it anyway. It's killing me to have him so far away! : (
